Austria is bracing for a sharp weather turnaround after days of intense heat. Meteorologists warn that from Tuesday onward, the atmosphere will become increasingly unstable, with a marked rise in thunderstorm risk and the potential for severe weather across large parts of the country. Forecasts highlight the danger of heavy rainfall, hail, and storm‑force gusts.
Storms Building from Morning Onward
Already by late morning, the first showers may develop in and around Tirol. As the day progresses, thunderstorms will expand across the western and southern regions, eventually reaching all of Austria by evening. Where individual storm cells intensify, meteorologists expect localized severe conditions: torrential downpours capable of producing large volumes of water in minutes, hail formation, and strong wind bursts.
Between storm phases, the sun will still break through. The most stable conditions are expected in eastern Austria, where temperatures may climb again to up to 34°C. Elsewhere, highs will range between 24°C and 32°C, with oppressive humidity making the air feel heavy and muggy.
A Tense Night Ahead
The unsettled pattern continues into the night toward Wednesday. Additional showers and thunderstorms—some of them strong—will sweep across the country. The initial focus lies in and around Lower Austria, before shifting toward Vorarlberg, Tirol, Salzburg, and Carinthia later in the night.
Wednesday: Persistently Unstable
On Wednesday, the changeable weather persists. With temperatures between 23°C and 32°C, conditions remain humid. Along the northern side of the Alps, early morning showers are likely, followed by widespread thunderstorms developing again throughout the day. A freshening west to northwest wind will bring slight cooling, but it will not reduce the overall storm potential.
Outdoor Plans at Risk
Anyone planning outdoor activities over the next two days should monitor the evolving weather situation closely. Rapidly developing thunderstorms can create dangerous conditions in a short time.
